Trouble in Paradise (1932)
Get ready for a delightful love triangle and a barrel full of laughs. In Trouble in Paradise, Herbert Marshall finds himself between Miriam Hopkins and Kay Francis. Miriam is his partner in crime, whom he met while they were both trying to rob each other. She steals his watch; he pockets her garter. Now a loyal partner, she’s devoted to him and assists him in his burglaries. Kay is his next target: a rich widow.
A laugh every minute, you can absolutely feel the “Lubitsch Touch” in this naughty pre-Code comedy. In my favorite scene, Herbie appeals to Kay to be hired as her business manager. Her affairs are in shambles, he says. If he were in charge, he’d bend her over his knee and give her a good spanking. Kay looks him up and down, pauses, and coos, “You’re hired.”
I’d never heard of Trouble in Paradise before, and since I’ve seen thousands of old movies, chances are that you’ve neve heard of it either. Rent it this weekend and mix a batch of cocktails for your friends. It’s very funny, and you’ll learn to look at each of the stars differently. Not normally known for their comedic talents, each Herbie, Miriam, and Kay get to shine in a different element. You’ll also see C. Aubrey Smith, Charles Ruggles, and Edward Everett Horton in the supporting cast.
