Two Lovers (2008)
Joaquin Phoenix starts this movie depressed, standing on a vacant bridge on a gloomy day with a dry-cleaning bag in his hand. For no reason apparent to the audience, he suddenly jumps off the bridge. It’s not the most suspenseful beginning, because if he dies, the movie’s over. Still, the point is that he’s extremely depressed. He doesn’t find solace in his parents’ support, and he doesn’t find hope in the girl they set him up with, Vinessa Shaw. Instead, he’s drawn to his new neighbor, the wildly beautiful (but also just wild) Gwyneth Paltrow. It doesn’t matter that she parties too much and is temperamental; it never does, does it?
I only watched this movie for Gwyneth Paltrow, but she was in her indie-phase; I should have known any movie she made after Running with Scissors wouldn’t be mainstream. Two Lovers was very depressing, and I don’t recommend it unless you like Joaquin Phoenix’s usual fare. His movies are a little too offbeat and dark for my taste, and I would definitely put this movie in the same category. After it was over, I felt like I needed to watch a Disney cartoon to cheer up.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to adult and sexual content, I wouldn't let my kids see it.
