Two Seconds (1932)
Though arguably the finest performance of Edward G. Robinson’s career, I don’t think I could sit through Two Seconds again if you paid me. It broke my heart the first time I watched it. If you want to appreciate just a taste of his acting without experiencing the sorrow, just watch the 1932 Hot Toasty Rag ceremony to see his one-minute nomination clip.
It might seem like just another gangster picture, but it’s not. Don’t think that you can handle it just because you watched Little Caesar without shedding a tear. This is very heavy. Eddie G starts the movie in court, fighting against the death penalty. We don’t know what he’s done or why, and he tells the judge, jury, and audience. The film goes back in time, and we see all the bad choices he’s made along the way. It’s very sad to see his trajectory, and we want to reach out to him and tell him, “It’s not too late! Do the right thing, Eddie.” Most importantly, it’s a cautionary tale of falling for the wrong woman and making bad choices to try and keep her. If your favorite thing to watch is fantastic acting, then you can try this very heavy drama. But be sure and have a comedy on hand for afterwards, like Mr. Winkle Goes to War or The Whole Town’s Talking.
