Uncle Silas (1947)
In a very British thriller, Jean Simmons inherits a fortune but finds herself a target of assassination because of it. This is a period piece, a natural follow-up to her smash hit in Great Expectations, and you’ll get to see her in some beautiful costumes. However, either the suspense was lost in translation or too much time has passed. It’s much more slow than thrilling.
It’s made clear from the get-go that the title character, Jean’s uncle (Derrick De Marney), is the bad guy. He’s very obviously evil and unscrupulous, willing to do anything to take back the inheritance he believes is rightfully his. How will he bring down the young niece standing between him and his money? You’ll have to rent this one to find out. Just have another movie handy that will be more likely to keep you awake. Katina Paxinou is a lot of fun as Derrick’s evil sidekick, but besides that, it’s not very good.
