Under Capricorn (1949)
If I weren’t an Ingrid Bergman fan, I would have absolutely turned off Under Capricorn. It’s an Alfred Hitchcock “thriller”, which to me usually spells out a nice long nap inspired by boredom, and the direction is particularly tiresome. The set of Joseph Cotten’s house is laid out like a stage play, with the camera panning back and forth between different rooms, upstairs and downstairs, inside and out—all in one smooth motion, yes, but too stylized for the audience to get immersed in the drama. With the actors putting in deliberate pauses to wait for the camera to slowly move to another room, it feels very “stage-y”.
But Ingrid looks very pretty, and I’ll always stick around for that. She plays a knock-off of her Gaslight character: constantly controlled, made to seem like she’s out of her mind and not fit for polite society, and prone to bedridden spells. Her husband Joe “appears” concerned, but not enough to convince visitor Michael Wilding (giving his best David Niven impression) that his concern is genuine. Michael, against his powerful cousin Cecil Parker’s warnings, makes it his mission to help Ingrid and inspire life in her again. But there’s a mystery lurking beneath the surface. . .
This movie literally put me to sleep three times. If you can sit through it all the way in one sitting, you’re in far better shape than I am.
