Upside Down (2012)
It’s a cute premise: There are two worlds whose residents can never leave, and two people from opposite worlds fall in love. Kirsten Dunst lives in the normal rightside-up land, and Jim Sturgess lives in upside-down land. They sneak meetings by each climbing to the edges of their world (he goes up, and she goes down). However, that’s where the cuteness ends. This movie is actually a drama!
There is a lot of symbolism, so if you like that sort of theme, you’ll probably like the story. The “upper” world is wealthy, and the “down” world is poor. The upper crust is allowed to “slum it” with the poor folk, but the reverse is treated as a crime. And the two leads’ names are Adam and Eden. There is surprising violence in the film, and while Jim and Kirsten have a forbidden romance, there are a lot of darker forces at play trying to keep them apart. Murder and blackmail aren’t off the table – anything to keep residents from the two worlds from mixing. Check it out if it appeals to you, but you’d better not suffer from dizzy spells or motion sickness, otherwise it will make you seriously ill.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie will not be your friend. You cannot see this movie. Period. The entire film rotates back and forth between upside-down land and rightside-up land, so you will probably land yourself in the hospital if you even watch the preview. In other words, “Don’t Look, Mom!”
