Vacation from Marriage (1945)
Anyone who thinks of Deborah Kerr as a mealy-mouthed victim of heroines hasn’t yet seen her in Vacation from Marriage. She starts the movie unhappily married to Robert Donat (or as I like to call him, Robert Donut). They know each other’s patterns and have reached a rut. So, when Robert gets called to service, they agree to take a vacation from marriage. Each thinks the other will flounder without them, and it’s pretty funny to hear them tell their friends how miserable they imagine their lives to be.
But as it turns out, Robert enjoys the service, and Deborah enjoys her freedom. She joins the WAVES and teams up with bunkmate Glynis Johns. The service whips her into shape as well, and with her new haircut, her snappy uniform, and a purpose in life other than to iron someone else’s shirts, she’s got a surprise for Robert when he comes back. It’s an adorable and hilarious monologue when she sizes him up for what he is; every wife in the audience will chuckle, I’m sure!
