Vengeance Valley (1951)
Although it’s not full of high production values and the cast is nearly all B-tier, Vengeance Valley has a pretty interesting story. Ray Collins has two sons: Robert Walker is biological, and Burt Lancaster is adopted. Robert is resentful, cruel, entitled, and a sneaking cheat. He’s married to the very sweet Joanne Dru, but he’s fathered the illegitimate child of Sally Forrest. In order to spare Joanne’s feelings and protect his brother’s reputation, Burt lies and indirectly implies his own paternity by visiting Sally and providing her with a $500 nest egg to help raise her baby.
Obviously, grudges will surface, lies will be exposed, and the titular vengeance will be sought. There are lots of bad guys out to get Robert, and through association, Burt. Joanne eventually realizes she married the wrong brother, but in the Wild West days, infidelity isn’t something to be taken lightly. There’s also the matter of Ray’s inheritance, and Robert might have some terrible plot up his sleeve. This isn’t the greatest western ever made, but it won’t hurt you to watch it. If you’re a die-hard fan of the genre, though, you’re better off sticking with your Randolph Scott favorites.
