Wake Island (1942)
Anyone who knows their WWII history knows about Wake Island. While the end of the 1942 movie won’t be a surprise, the duration will be wildly entertaining. If you don’t know your history, you’ll be wildly entertained and surprised – like I was, I must admit. Wake Island is one of the best WWII movies ever made, and since I’ve seen almost all of them, that’s quite a compliment.
You’ll see mind-blowing special effects, especially for that time period, that have lasted throughout the decades. It proves without a doubt that computers aren’t needed to wow an audience. Explosions, fighting on land, air and sea, and devastating attacks on an unprepared island are enough to keep your heart racing throughout this war picture. The scenes in-between the action are just as powerful. Brian Donlevy is the commanding officer, and while you expect him to be hard as nails, he shows remarkable compassion and insight to the young men beneath him. Robert Preston is the too-cool-for-school character, and William Bendix is the softie about to go on leave. Of course, he doesn’t go on leave, and there are plenty of “buy the farm” speeches to warn the audience that this war drama isn’t going to end well for everybody. To drive it home even further, Bendix finds a litter of newborn puppies and risks everything to care for them.
If all you’ve ever seen are the boring war pictures like The Sands of Iwo Jima, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Midway and Patton, there are a few movies that can change your mind about the genre. They Were Expendable, Objective, Burma!, The Longest Day and of course Wake Island. There are scenes from this movie that will stay with me forever.
