Walk Softly, Stranger (1950)
Even though he has an everyman, Tom-Hanks-esque exterior, Joseph Cotten couldn’t quite get past his villainous role in Shadow of a Doubt. In Walk Softly, Stranger, he plays a very bad boy. He starts off the movie telling a harmless old lady, Spring Byington, that he used to live in her house as a boy and he’d like to look around. It’s an obvious lie, but she’s sweet and believes him. The next thing he knows, she’s offered him a room and gotten him a job in the local factory. Maybe his crooked ways are behind him – or maybe when he gets invited to play poker with his coworkers, he’ll revert to his old ways and cheat. And when Paul Stewart, an old crony, comes into town, he might get tempted into participating in a serious robbery.
There’s a softer side to the film, as the title suggests. Valli, a millionaire’s daughter, is eligible and lovely, and Joe tells her he used to be in love with her when he was just a lowly newspaper boy and she lived in a mansion. She has an impediment, though, and it’ll take a man of high quality and serious nature to truly want a life with her. Is Joe pretending, or is he changing his ways? I’d recommend this semi-thriller for fans of Cotten. It’s a solid role for him and he’s solid in it. Spring Byington fans might enjoy seeing her in a non-ditzy role as well. Paul Stewart plays a serious villain, though, so if you’re used to his gentle demeanor in A Child Is Waiting, you might not like him in this.
