Waterloo Bridge (1940)
Waterloo Bridge is the second of three film adaptations of the play of the same name. It’s a terrible story, and I don’t know why they kept remaking it. After a woman’s sweetheart dies, she becomes a prostitute. Any woman who’s ever been in love knows that’s a ridiculous reaction. Doesn’t The White Sister make much more sense? (Helen Hayes becomes a nun when the love of her life is killed.)
But no; in this version, Vivien Leigh is a ballerina with a love of her work. She falls in love with a soldier about to be shipped out, Robert Taylor. Anyone who falls in love with a soldier should be prepared, for goodness sake! But no; Vivien becomes so broken-hearted after he’s killed, she walks the street. Romance is strictly taboo in the ballet company, but even though she gets fired for falling in love with Robert, she can get another job, can’t it? But no; she can’t.
I can’t stand any version of this movie, even the Leslie Caron version. Go ahead of try your hand at it if you like the cast, but realize it’s incredibly dated. And it’s extremely melodramatic.
