We Were Strangers (1949)
Since Jennifer Jones was cast as a “half-breed” in Duel in the Sun and a “Eurasian” in Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing, why shouldn’t she play a Cuban in We Were Strangers? Hopefully she just had a good chuckle and gave Paul Muni a call (he didn’t like his casting choices either).
In We Were Strangers, Jonesy gets bitten by the revolutionary bug when her brother gets murdered. She wants to assassinate Pedro Armendariz, but John Garfield convinces her to wait. If she goes through with her plan, another corrupt politician will take Pedro’s place and she’ll go to jail. John thinks she can join a larger group of revolutionaries and do a lot more damage to really change the country. You’ll see Gilbert Roland and Ramon Novarro in the supporting cast, but besides that, you won’t really see much else. It feels like a B-picture with A-list stars who were roped in because of their contracts. Both Jonesy and John can do better, and unless you really love Cuban revolution movies, you can skip this one.
