What If (2013)
“I just had sex and I’m about to eat nachos! It’s the greatest moment of my life – unless you screw it up with whatever you’re about to say.”
No matter how many times I watch this delightful movie, I’m always reduced to tears while laughing at Adam Driver’s hilarious “nacho” line. There are many moments of hilarity throughout the romantic comedy, but this one is undoubtedly my favorite. Some might love the conversation about the Fool’s Gold sandwich, others might crack up when Rafe Spall tumbles out the window, but I’m a sucker for the nachos every time.
This cute romance is quite quirky, fitting right in with modern humor and timing. Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan have great chemistry together, and as they agree to be just friends at the start of the movie, you get a genuine sense of companionship and affection. They get to know each other and truly like what they discover; how rare is that? Zoe has a boyfriend, and Daniel (after getting some very funny, and very true, advice from his pal Adam) doesn’t want to be a homewrecker. So they go to the movies together, chat on the phone, hang out at parties, and become closer than most people in romantic relationships! Cute, sweet, smart, and funny, they’re a very endearing screen couple. Instead of making movies about drug smuggling and prison escapes, why can’t Daniel make another romantic comedy with Zoe?
Nacho Guy – I mean, Adam Driver – and Mackenzie Davis are the “comic relief” side couple, but since the rest of the movie is quite funny on its own, and since they offer just as much wisdom as laughter, the term hardly applies. Simply put, there is no good time to leave the movie and get more popcorn. You’re not going to want to miss a single minute. It makes you laugh, but it also gives you hope that in this dysfunctional modern world, there still might be a little love out there. On a personal note, my brother and his fiancé loved this movie so much, they were inspired to elope!
I went to see this movie in the theaters, and as soon as it came out on DVD, I bought a copy. It’s one of my favorite modern romances, sort of like this generation’s When Harry Met Sally. If for some reason you’ve never seen the oddly titled What If (because it really has nothing to do with the story), buy yourself a copy. It’s a movie you’ll want to watch over and over again.
