Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950)
Otto Preminger does it again! He turns a mediocre film noir into a tense, exciting adventure. With his frequent leading man Dana Andrews at the helm, we’re not only in for a well-acted drama, we’re in for a bit of spice as he battles his inner nature to turn to the dark side. Similar to great flicks like Woman in the Window and They Live by Night, Dana gets handed a slice of bad luck, but then makes bad decision after bad decision and turns his slice into an entire pie. It’s always a lot of fun to watch people doing all the wrong things so you can shout to the television set, “Honey, don’t do it!” But unfortunately Dana won’t listen to you.
Dana is a cop with a list of brutality complaints against him. When he investigates a murder involving a sleezy gambling crowd, he accidentally kills a man by punching him too hard. Since there are no witnesses, Dana could easily telephone his headquarters and either confess to the accident or tell the story that when he arrived at the man’s apartment, he was already dead. But since Dana doesn’t listen to my advice, he hides the body in the closet and flees. Otto captures the scenes masterfully, showing the body slumped over in the closet at the same time another policeman is searching the apartment. “Nothing in here,” Dana says as sweat breaks over his forehead, and he closes the closet door.
An addition to the plot is Gene Tierney, Dana’s five-time costar. She’s not only a love interest but the daughter of an innocent man, Tom Tully, accused of the murder Dana committed. You’ll also see Gary Merrill as the head police detective, and a pre-famous Karl Malden as his over-zealous sidekick.
