Whirlpool (1949)
Although I usually love Otto Preminger’s noirs, I didn’t end up liking Whirlpool. It was just too predictable and actually bordered on silly. José Ferrer played an evil hypnotist who takes advantage of one of his patients, Gene Tierney. She’s a kleptomaniac married to Richard Conte who seeks therapy to make her stop stealing. See what I mean? It’s a little hard to take it seriously.
Thankfully, the lovely talents of Joe weren’t remembered for his villainous role in this movie. He’d only just come to Hollywood, and his next movie was Cyrano de Bergerac; the rest is history. He has a great speaking voice, so it makes sense that he’d be cast as a hypnotist – but an evil one who makes Gene commit crimes in his stead? He’s far too lovable for that. Gene is clueless and vapid, not really having to do anything but look pretty, and Richard seems thrilled to be acting in an Otto Preminger movie, but he knows he’ll never be as big a star as Otto’s favorite: Dana Andrews. Charles Bickford plays the police detective, and you can imagine him cracking up after every scene. Perhaps this movie was one giant spoof and the audience wasn’t let in on it.
