White Palace (1990)
If you’re looking for a very steamy evening, consider renting White Palace. Susan Sarandon is a lowlife waitress, and James Spader is wealthy. They meet at the titular grungy diner where Susan works, and later on they meet again at a seedy bar. Even though she’s significantly older than him and they come from completely different worlds, they feel a connection. Is it that they’re both grieving the deaths of loved ones, or is it just hormones?
What starts as a one-night stand develops into more. . . James’s highbrow friends don’t approve of her, and he learns quickly that if he tries to change her, his efforts will backfire. As a romantic present, he gets her a vacuum cleaner – and boy, does she get mad! If he doesn’t learn to accept her as the sloppy, sensual, bold broad that she is, he’ll lose her and her hidden (or not so hidden, if you watch the movie) talents. It’s a cute romance, with a good mixture of lightness and drama. I’m not one for the May-December reversal romance, but I recognize this is an enjoyable flick for a lot of other folks. Just don’t repeat what happened in my family: my mom and brother watched this movie together – and everyone says she looks like Susan Sarandon. Oops! White Palace does have a great tagline, though: “The story of a younger man, and a bolder woman.”
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to graphic sex scenes, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
