Wild Horses (2015)
A western and a mystery? Sign me up! I really enjoyed Wild Horses because the plot was interesting, and it pulled together two former teen heartthrobs and put them in a setting different than their normal one. James Franco and Josh Hartnett play rival brothers who have a strained relationship with their powerhouse father, Robert Duvall. Duvall also directed this slow-burning drama, so if you’re a fan of his, you’ll want to check this one out.
This is an unusual movie, since not many blend crime with wide open spaces. In one sense, it’s freeing, like the title, to see the open plains and a vast ranch. On the other hand, there’s a detective investigating a terrible crime from fifteen years earlier and digging up family secrets. Even when you think you’re wild and free, something can happen and make you feel trapped. If that type of dichotomy appeals to you, you’ll probably like Wild Horses.
In case you’re wondering why there’s a beautiful female detective on the case who wears sexy black lingerie under her uniform, it might help you to know she’s married to the director. Proud husbands who like the world to know that a beautiful woman chose them can sometimes be very cute, and it certainly feels like Robert Duvall was very proud of Luciana Pedraza in this movie.
