Wimbledon (2004)
I’ve discovered, upon honoring Kirsten Dunst as Star of the Week, that her body of work consists of two extremes: cutesy movies or creepy dramas. Thankfully, after finishing the unkindest review I’ve ever written for The Virgin Suicides, I’ve come to the end of the alphabet and can now relax with Wimbledon. Even if you’re not a big tennis fan, you can still enjoy it.
Paul Bettany stars as a former tennis champion who has gotten lazy and complacent. No longer in top form, he takes a job as a coach and meets the younger, far more vivacious Kirsten. She’s a bright talent, and her optimism gives him the courage to enter competitive tennis again. As they both travel to Wimbledon, they discover that they can have it all: talent, success, and love. Isn’t that swell? This is a lighthearted romance that doesn’t feature anything bad – which makes for a very refreshing change.
