Wings (1927)
If any of you out there wonder why Gary Cooper was so popular, look to the film Wings. Just like Joan Crawford, Gary became popular during the silent era. When talkies came out, his fans were loyal no matter how lousy he was or how he aged. Wings was a huge hit and won the first Academy Award for Best Picture!
Gary doesn’t have a very big part in this movie, but it certainly didn’t hurt his career to be in the first Best Picture winner. Buddy Rogers and Richard Arlen are the leads, playing rivals in their professional and personal lives. They both have an interest in flying, and in the glamorous Jobyna Ralston. Believe it or not, the “It” girl (Clara Bow) isn’t the object of both men’s affection! She’s the adorable girl next door, desperately in love with Buddy. There’s a misunderstanding when Jobyna says goodbye to both boys when they’re called to the line of duty: although she likes Richard, she gives Buddy her picture to remember her by.
While Clara Bow does have quite a hefty part in this one, Buddy and Richard are the stars of the show. This is a war picture, with tons of flying footage that wowed audiences at the time (and still wows audiences to this day). This is also a very heavy drama. Just because it’s a silent movie doesn’t mean you’re going to laugh at the overacting and thick makeup. You’ve got to prepare for some sadness. After all, this is a war picture. This is one of the most famous silent movies, so if you like that genre, you won’t want to miss this one. Plus, Clara Bow is just cute as a button!
