You Were Never Lovelier (1942)
After seeing You’ll Never Get Rich, I didn’t have high hopes for the second time Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth teamed up in You Were Never Lovelier. However, I wanted to watch it because I knew he’d finally admitted she was his favorite dance partner. It turned out to be really cute! I would definitely recommend it; it’s just as cute as Top Hat.
Adolphe Menjou is an overbearing, controlling father who takes an interest in every aspect of his daughters’ lives. When Rita is the next in line to be married, no one in the family holds their breath. She’s a famous ice queen and won’t thaw for anyone. This is a little weird, but just accept it: Adolphe starts writing love notes (signed anonymously) accompanying orchids to make Rita think she has a secret admirer. Where does Fred come in? He’s a dancer who wants a job in Adolphe’s nightclub, and when he gets mistaken for Rita’s suitor, he agrees to keep up the charade in exchange for a dancing contract.
This is a very cute movie with an adorable, quick screenplay. It will have you laughing every minute, even though the set-up is a bit strange. It’s like a cross between The Taming of the Shrew and Cyrano de Bergerac, but with some great dance numbers thrown in. “Dearly Beloved” and “I’m Old Fashioned” are very sweet, and “The Shorty George” is light-hearted and funny. This was Rita’s favorite of her movies, and if we didn’t know any better, the audience could easily think she and her leading man fell in love. He never looked at Ginger Rogers that way! Fred looks enraptured whenever they’re together, and at one point he actually requests that she turn around and stop looking at him so he can concentrate. If you haven’t seen this little gem, rent it. It’s guaranteed to raise your spirits, and you can totally understand why Rita was his favorite. You can bet your bottom dollar she never argued with him, complained about excess rehearsal, or gave suggestions of her own. Plus, she’s sweet, looks irresistible in her beautiful gowns by Irene, and adores him.
