You'll Never Get Rich (1941)
Right out of the heart of WWII escapism movies, Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth teamed up for the very silly and lighthearted You’ll Never Get Rich. The beginning is adorable, but it quickly devolved. If you love Fred and want to watch all his movies (especially the two he made with Rita, whom he finally admitted was his favorite dance partner) you can sit through it. Just know the opening fifteen minutes are the best.
At the start, Fred is a fabulous stage director and choreographer, and Rita is one of his chorus girls. She purposely makes mistakes on the dance steps so he can give her special attention; he’s unaware of her crush. Meanwhile, the show’s producer, Robert Benchley, is a chronic philanderer and wants Rita to be his latest mistress. When he has a diamond bracelet engraved with her name and his wife finds it, he has some explaining to do! He pretends that Fred and Rita are an item and he purchased the bracelet as a favor. To prove it, he makes them all double date together for dinner that night!
It's a very cute start, but after that little setup is over, it goes downhill. Fred gets drafted into the Army and always gets into trouble, spending more of his time in the brig than in training. When he gets a special deal to direct a show for the troops, he gets to see Rita again. It’s simple, silly, and the other enlisted men are kind of annoying. For more Fred and Rita magic, check out the delightful You Were Never Lovelier.
