Zoolander (2001)
I know it’s a modern classic, but I just didn’t like Zoolander. I’m very critical of movies that don’t portray difficult professions accurately, like prostitution and modeling. I couldn’t get past Diana Ross’s age in Mahogany, and I was flabbergasted at Faye Dunaway’s ignorance of the industry’s standards in Puzzle of a Downfall Child. Modeling is not a glamorous profession – don’t even get me started on Audrey Hepburn’s instant success in Funny Face. So, even though Zoolander is a comedy, I just couldn’t get behind it.
If you don’t care, go ahead and laugh at Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson being male models. They’re superficial, completely stupid, and can get away with anything because models have a complete freedom over their activities. There’s a friendly competition between the two rivals, and since the two actors are friends in real life, you see an easy chemistry between them. Directed and co-written by Ben Stiller, it’s a bit of a family affair for him, since his wife, parents, and sister are also in the cast. For another unrealistic take on the fashion industry, check out Robert Altman’s Ready to Wear.
