Legendary
by Stephanie Garber
The epic continues! Stephanie Garber’s incredible fantasy world of Caraval is equally entertaining in the second novel, Legendary. Don’t even think about reading these out of order, because this book picks up right when the last one left off. When I learned there was an entire series set in this incredible pseudo-theme park, I assumed it was going to be a different cast of main characters in next year’s Caraval. That would have been a great opportunity, since the setting itself was the main selling point for most readers. If the next year we followed a different player’s journey through the magical, mysterious treasure hunt, I would have been just as entertained.
However, the second book features the same main characters as the first. In case you haven’t yet read the first one, I won’t spoil things by naming the characters. What I will tell you is there’s a new character introduced: the Prince of Hearts. He’s so deliciously interesting and charming, it’s hard to believe he’s really a villain. That’s the beauty of Legendary; you can change your own mind anytime you want to, since the magic probably plays tricks on it anyway. Personally, I totally love the Prince of Hearts. I could read an entire spinoff book about his life and be perfectly happy.
If you love the Caraval world and Stephanie Garber’s imaginative writing style, you’ll still love the second book. I wasn’t too thrilled by the concluding novel, but I still love re-reading the first two. I can’t get enough of Garber’s description of feelings and colors; I even have a special Caraval candle to light whenever I curl up and read these books at Halloween time!
