Cover Girl (1944)
Remember that hilarious joke in Ziegfeld Follies where Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly meet at a park bench and pretend not to recognize each other? Gene asks if he’d ever seen Cover Girl, because he was the lead in the picture. Fred, impressed, says, “You’re not Rita Hayworth?” In a second punchline, Gene smirks and adds, “No, I’m not, Ginger.”
So, just in case you laughed along but had never seen Cover Girl, now’s your chance to put Gene Kelly’s mind at ease. It’s not the greatest musical in the world, but it does put two talented dancers together with musical numbers from the Gershwins. “Long Ago and Far Away” came from this movie, and it’s a pretty memorable dance. If you’re not a Rita fan, though, you probably won’t like it and are better off with another Gene flick. She plays a chorus girl plucked from obscurity to grace the cover of a magazine – hence the title. Just as with Funny Face, if you don’t like Audrey Hepburn, you won’t be rooting for her to become a world-famous fashion model. If you like Rita and want to watch it, you’ll see a lot of familiar faces in the supporting cast: Lee Bowman, Otto Kruger, Eve Arden, Edward Brophy, Leslie Brooks, Phil Silvers, and even a walk-on from a pre-famous Shelley Winters!
