Dane: Emperor Mage
by Tamora Pierce
If you haven’t started from the beginning, go back now and pick up the first of the “Dane books” in this exciting series The Immortals. Dane, the shape-shifting, animal-speaker is now a blossoming teenager, and two very different men start to notice her appearance. Which one will you root for: prince or pauper?
As Dane has developed quite the reputation for being able to heal animals, the Emperor of a distant land has summoned her and her magician tutor Numair to be his guests so that she might heal his ailing prized tropical birds. When they arrive, Dane notices strange magic in the air. What mysterious curse affects the birds? Did that skeleton really move? And why is she haunted by a mysterious old beggar woman?
So many questions, all to be answered in this fantastic volume Emperor Mage, chalk full of exciting battle scenes with humans, animals, and immortals. When I first read this series as a youngster, Emperor Mage was my favorite. It’s so incredibly exciting, and I loved the trip to the exotic land to see the royal birds. Now, many years later, I can still recognize that this is a great, exciting book, but I found myself rooting for the suitor Tamora Pierce obviously didn’t root for. The romantic leaning did put a damper on things a bit, but it’s still an interesting series to read.
Finished? Head on over to the bookstore and read The Realms of the Gods (reviewed here on The Rag).
