Death Takes a Holiday (1934)
What an exiting movie to see in 1934! The title is self-explanatory: Death is puzzled by why humans fear and hate him so much, so he decides to take a holiday and live as a human among humans for a long weekend. He takes the part of an eccentric prince so the other guests at the house party will make allowances for his strange behavior, and soon discovers the joys of being mortal.
If this premise sounds familiar, Death Takes a Holiday was remade in 1998: Meet Joe Black. If you’ve seen that one and liked it, I’m sure you’ll get a kick out the original. It’s not nearly as heavy as the remake, so there’s no need to bring a Costco-pack of Kleenex boxes, but it’s the same basic story. And for 1934, it was a very interesting and entertaining flick to go see on Saturday night. Fredric March is great as the passionate Death; he’s able to turn everyone’s greatest fear into a likable character in less than a minute. And, since it’s Fredric March in the lead, instead of someone who looks like Spencer Tracy, you can expect a romance between Death and an unsuspecting female. . .
