The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)
Disney had the great sense to combine two beloved cartoon shorts and release them under the title The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. With one silly and one scary, and with both fun, funny, and wild, there’s nothing not to love about either cartoon.
Starting out with The Wind in the Willows, Basil Rathbone narrates the irresistible story of Mr. Toad, Rat, Mole, Badger, and all the adventures at Toad Hall. Since “Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride” is one of my favorite rides at Disneyland, it’s a shoe-in that I’d love this cartoon, but even if you’ve never ridden on that adorable ride, you’ll still find it fun and funny. Eric Blore is the perfect choice to voice Toad, and his exciting tone matches the cute, thrilling illustration. This first cartoon is so adorable, wild, and clever, it’s impossible not to be in a good mood while watching it. And just in case Basil Rathbone can’t fix your blues, keep watching for Bing Crosby to do the trick.
A staple in my Halloween movie-watching is Ichabod Crane. Bing Crosby’s incomparable story-telling makes this a one-of-a-kind cartoon. The songs are absolutely adorable and hilarious, with old-fashioned charm and timeless gags thrown into the animation. And, with everyone chomping at the bit to get to the Headless Horseman portion, when it finally happens, it’s action-packed with several unexpected surprises. Just watch it once, and you’ll never be able to stop singing, “Who’s that walking down the street? Are they shovels or are they feet?” And, chances are, Bing can also give you a vocabulary lesson. I learned what “elucidate” means because of this cartoon!
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. When Brom Bones gets hit on the head with a horseshoe, he sees double for a few seconds, and that will make you sick. In other words, “Don’t Look, Mom!”
