In Like Flint (1967)
What a cute 1960s flick! If you go into it knowing it’s completely dated, completely ridiculous, and just an American version of James Bond, you’re in great shape to enjoy it. James Coburn certainly is a great womanizing secret agent with his tongue in his cheek, and I actually enjoyed In Like Flint more than I did the 1960s Bond movies. Call me crazy, but I like to laugh at silly movies.
Lee J. Cobb, once again the head of the ZOWIE organization, must have had a blast filming this sequel. He nearly stole the show from James Coburn with all his blowhard energy, humor, and out-of-character moments. Can’t imagine him in a bedroom scene? Can’t picture him dressing in drag to save his country? For a normally gruff actor playing father figures or mob bosses, this was a very enjoyable change of pace.
While I don’t quite echo Austin Powers’s sentiments of In Like Flint being my favorite movie, it was very cute to watch. The bikini-clad all-women army out to take over the world, Coburn’s harem, and the exciting yet funny action scenes really put me back in time to 1967. If you’re short on time and need to choose between the Flint movies, pick this one.
