The Bounty Hunter (1954)
I know Randolph Scott made close to seventy westerns and it’s hard sometimes to tell them apart. Even I have wondered to myself, “Have I seen this one?” while picking out a weekend matinee. If you’re trying to pick out a Saturday afternoon western, pick The Bounty Hunter.
Scottie McScottie Pants gives a fantastic performance, different than any other in the dozens of dozens of westerns he made. He’s not the villain in this one, but he’s not exactly a hero. He’s a bounty hunter who disrupts a small town when he conducts his covert search for his latest conquest. He’s charming to all and quickly assesses what each resident needs to open up. With the saloon girl, he flirts; with the doctor, he’s intelligent. His eyes constantly roam for assassins, he crouches under doorways, and he doesn’t buy any lie. He leads people to talking with a simple “Yeah?” or “Really?” then focuses to figure out what they’re really telling him. In one great, brief moment, he’s told the classic, “He went that way,” but before he heads in “that” direction, he looks behind the informer to make sure the bad guy isn’t lurking in the shadows.
The Members of the Board at Hot Toasty Rag were very proud to reward Randolph Scott with a Rag nomination for The Bounty Hunter. It also won Best Dramatic Screenplay, too! Clever, funny, tense, and exciting, this western is not to be missed.
