The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936)
If you’re on the lookout for classic war movies from the 1930s that stand the test of time, Beau Geste, The Dawn Patrol, and The Charge of the Light Brigade make it to the top of the list.
I’ll start with the only flaw to this movie, and then you can go out and rent it knowing what to expect. Olivia de Havilland is engaged to Errol Flynn, but she’s in love with his brother, Patric Knowles. No offense to Patric, who is a very handsome man, but what’s wrong with her? Errol Flynn is practically perfect! He even starred in the film The Perfect Specimen! It’s never explained, but she just doesn’t love him. Now that you know the ridiculous part of the film, go out and enjoy it.
Just like Beau Geste, Under Two Flags, and They Died with Their Boots On, this movie has an abundance of battle scenes. Most of them involve charges, as you might be able to tell from the title. Errol leads his soldiers countless times out onto the battlefield, and each time you think it can’t get any more exciting than the last scene, but director Michael Curtiz manages to keep you riveted.
One of the soldiers under Errol’s command is the new actor David Niven, who, after his small parts in this film and Dodsworth, as well as his first lead in Thank You, Jeeves, would look back on 1936 as the year that propelled him into stardom. No spoilers, but he has a very memorable part in this movie.
If you don’t like war movies, you don’t have to rent this one. You can watch a swashbuckling Errol Flynn movie instead. If you do like the popular genre, add this one to your list. It’s very well done, and it’s one of the classics to come out of the 1930s. For years, I used to dislike the war genre, but I finally realized my opinion stemmed from having seen all the rotten ones first. The Charge of the Light Brigade was one of the ones that changed my mind.
