The Gay Divorcee (1934)
In their second pairing, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers got promoted to top billing and star characters, following bit parts in Flying Down to Rio. The Gay Divorcee is a cute little romantic comedy with a plot that could only fit in with the screwballs of the 1930s. Ginger is looking for a divorce, so her lawyer Edward Everett Horton arranges for her to get caught in a fake tryst. In those days, one had to have a “darn good reason” to file for divorce, and people often arranged for a fake correspondent to help them even when they weren’t unfaithful.
However, when Fred shows up in Ginger’s hotel room instead of the hired “lover”, there’s a big mistaken identity that lends itself to lots of hilarity. Yes, it’s dated by today’s standards, but you’ll just have to remember the charm of the silver screen.
The most famous part of this movie is “The Continental”, a seventeen-minute dance number that’s one of the longest in history. It won the first Academy Award of Best Original Song, which is pretty exciting; it seems obvious that voters were impressed by the length of the song rather than the actual quality. There are prettier songs in the movie, like “A Needle in a Haystack” and “Night and Day”. But check out this cute Fred and Ginger musical to go back in time ninety years.
