The Last of the Mohicans (1936)
You’ve probably seen Daniel Day Lewis’s The Last of the Mohicans. But I’ll bet you didn’t know it was a remake, or that it was actually the eleventh film adaptation of the original novel. Before you dismiss the 1936 version by assuming it’s too tame, you should know it’s not. It was passed by the Production Code, but it certainly doesn’t feel like it. It’s extremely violent. The camera doesn’t pan away from torture, burning at the stake, or scalpings. In fact, the latter is so gruesome, I have to look away when I watch the movie. Maybe the 1992 version wasn’t such a big deal after all.
Randolph Scott, with his curly hair and deerskin hide costume, takes the lead in this exciting adventure flick. He doesn’t run around with wild, unkempt hair past his shoulders, but that doesn’t make him any less of an excellent Indian scout and guide to the white travelers who need his help. After watching him in this movie, there’s no doubt he can handle anything; it’s no wonder he became the king of the western genre in the 1950s!
Those with weak stomachs might want to stick with Captain Blood or a tamer adventure movie. But if you’re used to modern violence and want a movie that will change your mind about black-and-white censorship, this is a great one to start with. It’s tense, action-packed, and thrilling.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to violence, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
