The Three Musketeers (1948)
Even though Alexandre Dumas’s story isn’t exactly a comedy, every version of The Three Musketeers I’ve seen has seemed so silly it’s as if it’s spoofing itself. I don’t know why that is, but if you want to see yet another silly version, this time starring a non-dancing Gene Kelly, rent the 1948 version.
This includes the classic story of a young hotshot anxious to join the Musketeers and accidentally challenging three different members to a duel in the same afternoon. Once they realize everyone’s on the same team, they join forces to help protect the king, Frank Morgan, from the evil scheming Cardinal Richelieu, Vincent Price. Along the way, there’s a bit of romance and a few double crosses, but it’s just too silly to be taken seriously. Lana Turner plays the femme fatale, and June Allyson plays the innocent maiden Gene falls in love with. Can either one of those girls believably act in a period piece? For that matter, can Gene Kelly?
The other Musketeers are a grumpy Van Heflin, a bland Robert Coote, and a comic relief Gig Young. Ian Keith, Keenan Wynn, Reginald Owen, and Angela Lansbury join the cast, but even though you’ll recognize most of the faces, it’s just not worth sitting through unless you really love Gene Kelly and insist on seeing every single one of his movies, even the lousy ones.
