The Three Musketeers (1993)
If you’re okay with every one of the three musketeers having an American accent, you’re in good shape to enjoy this version of the classic film. If you’re a stickler about period pieces and American colloquialisms mixing in where they don’t belong, find a different version. This 1993 version is not meant to be taken seriously, and it doesn’t pretend to for a minute.
The established musketeers are Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, and Charlie Sheen, with newcomer Chris O’Donnell trying to join them. Chris plays D’Artagnan, and as he tries to join the cool kids to avenge his father, he’s caught up in endless swordfights, fistfights, arrests, verbal battles, and corrupt schemes. In the beginning, he manages to anger all three of the other leads and set up consecutive duels in the same afternoon. It’s a funny scene, one that bonds them all together when they’re ambushed by bad guys, headed by main bad guy Michael Wincott. Of course, Tim Curry plays the corrupt Cardinal Richelieu, and he plays every scene up to his full melodramatic villainous potential.
There have been so many film adaptations of The Three Musketeers, it’s hard to tell them apart sometimes. My recommendation is to find a cast you like and start there. If you like these ’90s boys, give this one a shot.
