The Best Friend
by Adam Mitzner
While reading the first two books in the series, I longed to know more about the patriarch of the family. Thankfully, Adam Mitzner must have read my mind (or else received a lot of reader feedback) before writing the concluding book, The Best Friend. The entire novel is about Clint! It delves into his past, shows us glimpses of his life as a young husband, and takes us all the way through the present timeline, picking up about a year after Never Goodbye left off. We learn about his pain, we see the trajectory of his career, and we realize that even though he rattled off some flippant comebacks in the first book, his main motivation is always love.
Why is it called The Best Friend, you wonder? Because there’s another interesting character: Clint’s best friend. Full of mystery, contradictions, and of course, the selfishness of youth, the titular character threatens to steal the spotlight from Clint. He’s accused of murdering his new life, and Clint takes the case with unflinching loyalty. There are secrets galore, only to be explored and revealed through the decades. With so many plot twists, different points of view, and character studies, it’s easy to call this novel Mitzner’s masterpiece.
There is one little disclaimer I’ll give about this book: Clint’s wife dies of cancer (this has been mentioned in the previous novels) and there is quite a bit of detail about her decline. “Cancer books” are pretty popular at the moment, and there are some readers who actively turn away from them. If the subject bothers you, you might want to skip this installment. I read the sad pages very quickly and concentrated on the rest of the book.
