If you're not looking forward to the holidays, and you need a break from watching corny Hallmark movies, check out the comic whodunnit Garden Stake. It's hilarious, but very sarcastic, so if you're in the mood to laugh about human nature, read my review!

Sometimes it's worth sitting through a movie just to see the talent of the cast, or the great chemistry between the two leads. If you haven't seen these three movies yet, consider renting them for the great energy of the leading team:
In Top Secret Affair, Kirk Douglas and Susan Hayward have a battle of the wills. In An Act of Murder, Fredric March shows his devotion to his wife (on and off the screen!) In Happy Anniversary, David Niven's comic timing and domestic frustration even makes his leading lady look good. No Sweet Valley all year? Don't worry, I wouldn't do that to you. I've been reading the delightful Sweet Valley University series this year, and have now posted the six latest reviews to the Sweet Valley page. Check out what's been going on in Out of the Picture, Spy Girl, Undercover Angels, Have You Heard About Elizabeth?, Breaking Away, and Goodbye Elizabeth.
When it was Rock Hudson's week on The Rag, I wasn't able to get my hands on a few mid-50s movies that I wanted to see. I've since watched them, and now they're added to his page. Check out these entertaining soap-opera dramas!
Written on the Wind Never Say Goodbye A Farewell to Arms Now that fall is winding down, it's time to head into those ridiculously cheesy, feel-good books in time for Christmas. What thrillers did you read during the past few months as the weather turned colder?
I read Dead Letters and The Truth and Other Lies, both of which were very entertaining! Check out my reviews to find out more. It's always double the fun when you love both stars in a movie. And when the dynamic duo make more than one movie together, it's pure magic. Who have you loved so much on the big screen you wished had gotten married offscreen? Here are some movies starring adorable onscreen couples who have also been Stars of the Week:
For more the sweet pairing of David Niven and Deborah Kerr, check out the tragic Bonjour Tristesse. If you want to see another Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara, rent the wartime drama This Land Is Mine. Did you love Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson? Try the musical remake Lovely to Look At. How much do you know about the wonderful director Robert Wise? Can you rattle off more than The Sound of Music from his list of credits? I've seen more than half of his 40 feature films, so I was in a great position to appreciate Joe Jordan's book Robert Wise: The Motion Pictures. The second edition was just released, so read my review to see if you'd like to read it!
Alec Guinness's time as Star of the Week has come to a close, and all 31 of his reviews are now posted to his page. Can you believe we've reached our final clue for the year? That's right, folks, next week's Star of the Week is also our Christmas Star. What a year we've had; I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have. Did you discover new actors you'd never known before, like Felix Bressart or Henry Hull? Perhaps you had fun revisiting your favorite movies of Meryl Streep or James Dean. From Gary Cooper to James Franco, from Helen Hayes to Gwyneth Paltrow, we've had quite a range to add to our collection of Stars. Are you ready for your final clue for 2020?
Next week’s star turned a depressing Alec Guinness drama into a delightful Christmas comedy fifty years later. It’s one of my all-time favorite movies! Any guesses? Check back on December 1st to find out if you're right. Hats off to Alec Guinness, our new Star of the Week! To start things off, we've got reviews posted for two great movies you might not have seen: A Majority of One and Kind Hearts and Coronets. Also, a video clip from Oliver Twist is posted to his page. You know the drill by now; come back every day for new reviews. Enjoy! Before I get bogged down with Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel, I always try to get my hands on those extra few movies from Stars of the Week that I didn't get to watch in time. So, before we wrap things up at the end of the year, let's catch up with the following:
Gary Cooper in The Hanging Tree Richard Burton in Prince of Players Jane Russell in The Las Vegas Story William Holden in Apartment for Peggy Errol Flynn in Too Much, Too Soon Grace Kelly didn't make many movies, so it's time to end her time as Star of the Week. You can find all 11 of her reviews now posted to her page. Are you ready for your clue? We're almost done with our Star lineup for the year; and what a year we've had!
In many of his movies, you’ll have to search through his disguises to recognize him. He was Grace Kelly’s last onscreen leading man. Any guesses? Check back on Sunday to find out if you're right. Grace Kelly is our new Star of the Week! To start things off, we've got a video clip from To Catch a Thief, and reviews of The Country Girl and Rear Window. Enjoy, and come back to her page every day for new reviews! |
