Happy Halloween everyone! I'm planning on watching some old Vincent Price horror flicks tonight. What are you watching? If you need any suggestions, check out the list of over 40 Halloween movies on the Rag, all featuring our Stars of the Week. New to the list this year include The Devil's Advocate and The Sixth Sense!

Just in time for Halloween, it’s time to indulge in the safety of scary books and movies that we believe won’t ever become reality for us. I love the one-night-stand-gone-wrong books, or the perfect-guy-turns-evil movies. They’re so melodramatic! Check out the book review for this fantastic thriller: The Mistake I Made. Highly recommended!
As you already know, I sort my books out by season, and now that it’s fall, I’m reading my thrillers and spooky books collected throughout the year. Check out these three thrillers I really enjoyed: Fractured, Into the Light, and Force of Nature. The first warns that suburbia isn’t as sweet as it seems, the second involves a misogynistic cult, and the third focuses on the aftermath of a hiking trip gone wrong.
I know I've already posted it before, but since we've just honored both Spencer Tracy and Steve Martin, I thought it was good timing to bring Father of the Bride back in style. Let's face it, that story never goes out of style! It's such a great book, hilariously funny and true, and with adorable illustrations, so if you haven't ever read this classic, pick yourself up a copy then rent your favorite version.
Spencer Tracy's week has come to a close, and all 41 review are now posted to his page. Here's your clue for next week's star:
Next week’s star is a Rag-winning former child actor whose relationship with Spencer Tracy inspired him to become a minister. Do you know who he is? We're going to take a little break and share some spooky books for the fall. But check back on November 1st to find out who he is! Our new Star of the Week is Spencer Tracy! To start off, let's post reviews that connect him to our previous star, two of my favorite of his movies: Father of the Bride and Father's Little Dividend. Also posted is a review and video clip from Adam's Rib. Enjoy, and come back to his page every day for new reviews! What does the fall represent, besides beautiful scenery, the start of the holiday season, and the time to exchange sweaters for tank tops? School! See, back in the old days, kids started school in September, not the second week of August. For that reason, I always find it fun to read books set in high school in September. Here are three fun ones I enjoyed at the start of the season:
The Truth About Alice – a cautionary tale Pretending to be Erica – a thriller about finding yourself Ten Things We Did (And Probably Shouldn’t Have) – fun, funny fluff Steve Martin's week has come to a close, and all 36 reviews are now posted to his page, as well as two of his novels. What a fun time we've had here at The Rag this year. Foreign movies, comedies, and now back to the classics. Did you know that Steve Martin was in 13 remakes? Next week's star played his original role in two of them.
Do you know who he is? Check back on Sunday to find out. I’m always on the lookout during a movie’s opening credits to see what medium it was based off. When a novel was the original inspiration, sometimes I’m curious to pick it up to see the differences from page to screen. Check out my reviews of The Jane Austen Book Club, Dances with Wolves, and How to Make an American Quilt.
It seems like just yesterday that I posted Sweet Valley University book reviews. . . And it was! But since I’ve been sticking with this series for years now, I wanted to get you caught up. Today’s batch includes three of the summer editions and two thriller editions—perfect for recapping the summer and heading into fall. For me, the summer books weren’t that great, but the spooky ones were my favorites of all the thriller editions!
