Just hitting the shelves is my latest book: "The Week Before Christmas: Three Novelettes in the Holiday Spirit" - check it out on Amazon now! From best-selling author E.H. Nolan comes another holiday short story collection. Three novelettes all take place during the week before Christmas with unexpected gatherings of family and friends making things complicated but still reminding us that the holiday season is full of love. Charming, real, and bittersweet, these three stories give readers valuable lessons just in time for Christmas: A little distance can be a good thing, it only takes one person to ruin a whole set of plans, and sometimes impossible Christmas wishes do come true. The paperback comes out tomorrow, but the kindle version makes an early entrance today! Also, if you missed "Sergeant Benson's Lie", my WWII historical fiction released in the spring, it is on sale just in time for Christmas. Half the price and all the drama, a perfect gift for that history buff in your life, or someone who loves the glitz and glam of old Hollywood. A toast to James Stewart, our final Star of the Week for 2021! To honor one of the great iconic stars of the silver screen, we're starting off with a video clip from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and reviews of two favorites you might not have seen: Anatomy of a Murder and The Flight of the Phoenix. Come back to his page every day for new reviews, and he'll take us right through the new year! Sometimes when it's nice and sunny outside, you don't feel like a really heavy drama. But the darker weather, comforting fireplace, and security blankets to curl up with invite more intense subject matters. For the brave ones out there. . .
The Hook - three American soldiers have orders to kill their captured prisoner, but it's harder than they think (starring Kirk Douglas) The Valley of Decision - a period epic of feuding families and class distinction (starring Gregory Peck) The Apartment - though quite funny, the main subject matter is very heavy: marital infidelity, suicide, and blackmail at the office (starring Shirley MacLaine) Fun fact: all three movies have received Rag awards! Van Johnson's time as Star of the Week has come to an end, and all 35 of his reviews are now posted to his page. Are you ready for your clue for next week's Star?
It's been quite a year, with lots of old favorites and new movie stars to learn about and celebrate. From Randolph Scott to Eddie Murphy to Maggie Smith to Julia Stiles - who were some of your favorites? Any requests for next year? Let me know in the comments below, and good luck guessing the final Star of the Week. Here's your clue: Our last Star of 2021 played the same part as Van Johnson ten years earlier in a classic romance. His most famous film is a sentimental Christmas favorite that makes everyone cry when they watch it. (Yes, he's also our Christmas Star!) |
