Boy, do I have a lot of Hollywood books! I think this is the last of the bunch, though—that is, until I take another trip to my favorite bookstore. Speaking of birthdays, do you know what I picked up a couple weeks ago? The Prince and the Pauper, Commonwealth, and my first Frank Sinatra biography! I know, it’s crazy to believe I’ve never read one, since you know how much I love him.
But, those will be shared another time. For now, enjoy 100 Years of Hollywood: A Century of Movie Magic, The Image Makers: Sixty Years of Hollywood Glamour, and Perfect Pairs. One of my readers sent me a message asking for the origin on the name "Hot Toasty Rag". She wondered if I was making a "toast" to the actors and actresses of the week. What a cute idea! Actually, that wasn't my intention, but I love the double meaning. So, while Maureen O'Hara's time as Star of the Week has come to an end, and all 22 of her reviews are now posted to her page, now is the time to guess who we will "toast" to next week!
In Maureen O’Hara’s last movie, one she came out of a twenty-year retirement to make, she was paired up romantically with next week’s star, a powerfully magnetic actor who won two Oscars. Any guesses? Check back on Tuesday to find out! Maureen O'Hara is Hot Toasty Rag's Star of the Week! I could have made her my December star, since one of her most famous films is a beloved Christmas favorite, but I just couldn't wait that long! To start with, here are three reviews posted to her page: Miracle on 34th Street, The Quiet Man, and The Parent Trap. This doesn't happen very often, but I read a modern book and totally loved it. Read my full review of The Story of Beautiful Girl to find out why!
Charles Laughton's time as Star of the Week has come to an end, and all 29 of his reviews have now been posted to his page. Here's a clue for next week's star:
Next week's star impressed Charles Laughton when she was seventeen years old, and he helped propel her to stardom by making her his leading lady in two 1939 films! Any guesses? Check back on Friday to see if you're right. This week, Hot Toasty Rag will be honoring the talent and films of Charles Laughton! To start out with, I've posted reviews to his page for three of his most well-known classics: The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mutiny on the Bounty, and The Private Life of Henry VIII. Also, check out his video clip of his incredible performance as Quasimodo in Hunchback--but bring your Kleenexes! I didn't last ten seconds! It happens to everybody. You like the cover, the synopsis is intriguing, and you preview the author’s writing style—then you can’t stand the book! Check out my full reviews to find out why I didn’t like The Girls at the Kingfisher Club and How to Build a Girl.
Robert Newton's week has ended, and all 25 of his reviews have now been posted to his page. Now it's time for a new star. Want a hint?
Robert Newton’s costar also played Javert in another version of Les Misérables. And, Disney modeled one of their cartoon characters after his performance as a famous literary bell-ringer. Any guesses? Check back on Saturday to see if you're right! Happy Birthday to Hot Toasty Rag! In one year, we've shared 780 movie reviews and 187 book reviews, for a grand total of 967 reviews on our site! Party time! What have been some of your favorites that The Rag has reviewed? Anything you'd like to see posted? Any movie stars you'd like to see honored as Star of the Week? Let me know in the comments or send me a message on the About page. Thanks for all your support and here's to another year : ) |
